The Puzzle Manifesto

A key outcomes from the Symposium is a draft ‘Manifesto’ for the new method developed during the project that we have named ‘Easy to Understand’ which combines the already existing ‘Easy to Read’ method with the use of Web, multimedia and digital tools:

How to make Easy to Read materials more Easy to Understand

• ‘Nothing about us without us!’ - make your Easy to Read information with your learners not for them
• Take a ‘Co-Production’ approach and engage people with ID in the process so that they can learn by making Easy to Understand materials
• Base your work on the rights of people with ID
• Start with peoples’ aspirations – “­What are our dreams and goals?”
• Apply Easy to Read methods and use ‘multiple media’
• Use digital media production to involve people with ID in different roles; they can take part as actors, reviewers, photographers, user-testers, editors etc.
• Work with people with ID as ‘Experts by Experience’ and support them to be self-advocates
• Involve parents and professionals too!
• Work ‘in vivo’ - in the communities where people live their lives
• Work in teams to make Easy to Understand materials that are locally relevant personal and individualised
• Work together to make generally relevant materials to be publically shared for the benefit of all
• Share your methods and your Easy to Understand materials through the Puzzle Website
